eftychia: Me in kilt and poofy shirt, facing away, playing acoustic guitar behind head (Default)

From a locked entry by [livejournal.com profile] tamnonlinear, May 2007, quoted with permission:

At some point a little bit of squirrel-proofing had been attempted [...] on the bird feeders, mounting four hanging feeders from a horizontal cross, feeder at the end of each arm, the cross at the top of a pole with a baffle.

Some damage had broken one arm of the cross, so it now hung down rather than out.

On that broken arm, a nuthatch was moving downward, creeping about in approach to a suet feeder.

I pointed it out to her. "You know, the tree clinging birds, like nuthatches and chickadees, don't like moving across branches. You probably get more of them coming to your feeder because of that broken arm. It makes them feel more at home."

She smiled. That was the reason she'd never 'repaired' it. "There are places for everything. Even the damaged things."
