I'm back in Baltimore but I'm still dealing with Pennsic. I got home much later than planned, mostly because I got woken up too early on Sunday by well-meaning camp-mates, which meant I hadn't had enough sleep, then couldn't nap because my departure time was uncertain (the nature of the process, not anyone's fault), so when I did get in the truck to drive home, I was only good for a couple of hours before I had to pull over for a nap. Sleeping in the cab of the truck wasn't especially restfull, so I never felt rested enough to go more than a couple hours at a stretch between naps. (I figured bringing the truck and myself home undamaged was more important than what was left of my schedule.) I got home about fifteen hours later than I'd expected to. And then I unloaded the cab, showered, and fell down on my bed, not pulling my stuf out of the back of the truck until after midnight.

The drive to and from Pennsic is tiring to begin with, even when I can share the driving (such as when I go in Fred's car, which has been my usual means in recent years), but driving the U-Haul for Medeival Miscellania makes it work. In a huge but underpowered truck that won't do the speeds I'm used to, takes more concentration to steer than a passenger car, has no cruise control, and falls to 50 MPH going uphill, the drive takes longer and is exhausting. I like to drive, but driving the truck isn't fun. On the other hand, it does make it much easier to transport my gear (between musical instruments, camera equipment, sheet music, photo albums, cooking stuff, garb, food, bedding, and my tent, it adds up to a lot to fit into a sedan, especially if another person's stuff has to fit as well), and I can really use the bit of spare cash I earn by doing so! It's work, but, at least for now, it's worth it.

Thing is, I actually managed to pace myself reasonably for a change at War this year, getting tired but never really wearing myself out completely, until that killer drive home.

Today I'll be driving the truck to Virginia to deliver it to Medieval Miscellania, then probably catching the Metro back to College Park, possibly eating dinner with The Once And Future Girlfriend (who fortunately seems amused to be called that), and going to Thrir Venstri Foetr (Three Left Feet) rehearsal. Exactly how I'll be getting back to Baltimore afterwards is still sort of vague. Tomorrow, I'll finish unpacking and start the marathon laundry session, and try to get back into the swing of my mundane job. (Fortunately my mundane job has a fannish boss.) I just hope my car is still where I left it nearly two weeks ago, up in Charles Village, next to one of the photo labs I go to.

Sometime ths week I hope to write up a description of how my Pennsic went and post it here. I haven't decided yet whether to do it as backdated entries or just post it as a trip report. I did notice that one of the updates I sent from my phone never got posted. Odd.

Waiting for Metro to take me to College Park, where I'll be about an hour
late for rehearsal. I said driving the truck wasn't fun earlier but that's
not completely true. It's fun for the first forty minutes or so,
playing "look ma, I'm a truck driver", unless I'm in the mountains. Still,
it's a lot more work over the long haul than driving a car.
