Argh. The insomnia-monster made its saving throw against my tryptophan spell.

Ten hours of sleep Thursday morning helped but was not enough to catch up on the sleep deprivation of the rest of the week, so I was hoping to crash early tonight/this morning and start Friday somewhat rested. Had a potato/carrot/onion/spinach/olive/cheese omelette-fritatta thing (uh, I was also pretty hungry). As I've noted in the past, the eggs plus cheese plus fried potato combo produces a noticeable tryptophan effect for me despite the fact that I don't feel the effects of the tryptophan from the eggs when combined with carbs other than potato. I even had pear cider with it. I did get drowsy. I didn't make it all the way to sleep before the effect started to fade. Whoops.

So I'm up, checking my mail, peeking at Usenet, pulling laundry out of the dryer (oh bother -- my least-falling-apart "pirate shirt" now has a significant tear, so I've got to do some sewing on it this afternoon so I can wear it on stage Saturday night), and will try again to get some sleep in a little while. Thing is, I'm disinclined to add more chemicals to my body at the moment (and don't have enough room in my stomach right now for another tryptophan-bomb (I need to come up with a low-fat/low-cal means of getting that effect)), so I'm gonna have to go up against the insomnia-monster hand-to-hand.

Maybe I can find a book that's +2 against insomnia ... just hope I don't roll a critical-miss (fumble) on this attack. If that happens, I'll have to run away and distract myself with a craft project.

(I suddenly realized how long it's been since I played any role-playing game (Traveller, three changes-of-address ago -- when I was still living with [livejournal.com profile] lothie), especially D&D in particular (uh, early to mid 1980s?). But the memes are still active in my brain. Then again, I've always maintained that I never "outgrew" it, just stopped having time and opportunity.)

"Feld's Second Law: When a diligent law abiding citizen requires the assistance of a lawyer to avoid violating the law, an injustice has been committed." -- Harold Feld. (I just spotted this in rec.music.filk. I may have heard him say it some time before though.)

Late for All-Fools-Day (because I waited for permission to post it here) but still worth it, IMNSHO ... Remember that RFC about a security enhancement to TCP/IP, the "Evil Bit", that I mentioned in a link sausage entry? (RFC 3514) Drew Dean posted a proposed tweak in the Risks Digest, which a friend forwarded to me: The Angelic Bit vs The Evil Bit )

Didn't sleep very well this morning when I finally did get to sleep, so I took a nap this afternoon. Set an alarm to wake me before rush hour parking restrictions go into effect (today is a street cleaning day, so I put my car on the other side of the street). When I did wake up, it was from an unpleasant dream.

what I remember of the dream )

woke up in a pretty un-fun mood and had to check the clock three or four times to convince myself that I had not in fact missed the start of rush hour. Took a shower, and am going to try to force myself to get out to the nail salon and the pharmacy (and a grocery store). Almost afraid to look out the window for my car.

Something tells me I'm not going to sleep well tonight, either ... after a friend forwarded me this URL with the message, "I've got a bad feeling about this." Somebody with more of a politics-clue care to give me some idea just how concerned I should be about this? As far as I can tell, it was introduced to comittee in January and nothing's happened since. Is it one of those things that gets submitted every few years and never goes anywhere, or is it a creepy sign of impending further creepiness?

JOINT RESOLUTION

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.
Obviously, there's the matter of convincing three fourths of the state legislatures to play along as well, which ought to put the brakes on things, but in light of historical parallels between what Bush has done so far and how a certain other famous politician rose to power, I'm feeling a bit jumpy about it. Somebody tell me I don't have to worry.

Mood:: nervous
