Trying something new. Instead of having quotes scribbled on scraps of paper, and browser windows left open to pages with something I want to quote on them, I'm starting to keep a file of things I may want to post as "quote of the day" entries in my journal, and I've put together a shell script to post the first entry and remove it from the file. The cron daemon should fire it up at 5:20, so with any luck I'll be able to see that it worked when I get up in the morning. OTOH, if there's a confusing garbage entry in my journal around then, this is why.

Now I won't have to worry about forgetting what quotes I wanted to post, or about missing a day when I've got three different quotes in mind to post. I just have to be careful not to let the quotes file run dry. (I wonder whether I can get far enough ahead to leave the cron job working over Pennsic.)

Loren MacGregor wrote in rec.arts.sf.fandom:

"I have a favorite story that I am pleased to say startled Chip Delany when he first heard it. A close acquaintance of mine, some years back, claimed that if you were truly Christian, you had to also be a transvestite, because Christianity meant to love others; but to love others you must first love yourself; but the Bible said [NB: it doesn't] that loving someone of the same gender was wrong; so, in order to love yourself, you must be able to look in the mirror and see someone of the opposite gender. And, yes, he was perfectly serious.

"Try that on a few of the religious right, and see where it gets you."

(Rob Hansen replied, "Oh, that's wonderful. I love the idea of this guy convincing others of the logic of his argument, and this spawning a new breakaway Christian sect." Hmmmmm. Time for D'Glenn to found a sect? Kinda puts a new spin on the word "crossdressing", doesn't it? Start suggesting names for this church, folks...)

I grabbed this meme from [livejournal.com profile] broken_gizmo, just after putting groceries in the fridge.

  1. What was the last TV show you watched?
At all? The first fifteen minutes of an episode of Boston Public that I taped in early March. In its entirety? An episode of Alias from about the same time. (I'm behind on watching the stuff I taped for time-shifting.)
  2. What was the last thing you complained about and what was the problem?
How early I'll have to get up tomorrow to go to the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival where The Homespun Ceilidh Band is performing. Either that or what a pain it is to restring my 12-string guitar, which I did earlier today. (Tiny little tuners, slotted headstock, and both of my string cranks vanished. Bought a new crank while I was buying strings for my 6-string guitar, which I also have to restring tonight.)
  3. Who was the last person you complimented and what did you say?
The cashier at Han Ah Reum (grocery store). "I really like that earring; the heart is cute." (It was a ... "conch"(?) piercing -- a cartilage piercing not on the edge.)
  4. What was the last thing you threw away?
The carboard carrier that a six-pack of malta came in.
  5. What was the last website (besides this one) that you visited?
Venus Envy, a comic strip about transgendered people.
Music:: some news program on public television that I'm not really paying attention to
