"There are some things that transcend politics. Ice cream should be one of them."

(From a New York Times article about the right-wing ice-cream mentioned in my last "Link Sausage" entry. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vvalkyri for the NYT story -- which includes comments on a taste test, by the way.)

So ... I was just about to post to Elbows asking for advice regarding non-working VCRs, when I caught myself going off on a multiply-nested parenthetical tangent, recognized it as a symptom of being too tired to be trusted to write coherent email, and decided it's bedtime. Let's see whether I'm self-aware enough to keep this readable now that I've noticed the trend...

Migraine yestereday; I'm behind on reading everyone's journals and mostly behind on mailing lists as well. Did get better sleep than usual last night, thanks to the migraine drugs, but unfortunately I started getting all headachy again this evening. Played with The Homespun Ceilidh Band at the Frederick Towne Mall this afternoon (got there late 'cause I missed a turn and had to double back, but was still there in time to tune both guitars before our scheduled start time). Small audience, but folks came up to us afterwards to say they'd enjoyed it, and two people who bought CDs wanted them autographed. Got sweaty and tired, as expected. Right knee started giving me ominous warnings partway through. (Must remember to ask rheumatologist about that tomorrow.)

A cat-rescue organization had a row of kitties in cages looking for new owners. One orange one was HUGE. He had a really nice coat, and felt like all muscle, and was enourmous. A black kitten reminded me of Figgy (after Figgy realized that the humans weren't going to eat him). The folks there tried to convince me I needed a cat (I could use the company, and I could use a good mouser) but I explained that I can't afford to properly care for a cat right now -- even absent any emergencies, I can't really afford routine veterinary care (or the food). They got serious looks and thanked me very emphatically for being clueful enough to realize that. (Gee, you'd think maybe folks who didn't realize that are were a bunch of these cats got rescued from or something ... oh yeah, right, that's a near certainty, isn't it?) I also worried that it'd be unkind to keep a cat out of my bedroom if I don't have a housemate for the cat to sleep near (I'm allergic; I can have a cat in the house, but can't afford to have cat dander on my bed), but they said a cat would get used to that.

Drove from Frederick to Bowie to visit my mother. Long drive. Very crowded highways. Wound up spending most of the time talking to my brother, but did get to talk to Mom a little and wish her a happy Mother's Day. Tried to explain focal length, magnification, angle of view, and how film size interacts with those, to my brother. Not sure I was as coherent as I would have liked in my explanation. When I started getting unusual pains in various parts of my body, I figured it was time to head back to Baltimore while I could still drive.

Came home and sort-of-repaired an air conditioner on the third floor. (I don't think I actually fixed anything, but I did get the non-moving fan to start moving again for now.) Must remember to put the toolbox back in the boot of the car tomorrow.

Okay, not too many tangents. I go fall down now.
