In the aftermath of 9/11, when I was struggling with the horror and shock, and trying to come to grips with this scary new world I had to raise my child in, one thing settled in my heart as compensation for the lives lost, a purpose to the horror. It was the feeling that this was a grand opportunity to unite the civilized world, to draw us all together, to revel in our commonalities as human beings. As countries all over the world expressed their unity and support for us in the time of tragedy, I thought to myself "The victims of 9/11 gave their lives for this opportunity to bring the human village closer together. God works in mysterious ways I guess."
And then the Bushies blew it big time. In the year and half since 9/11, they've managed to further enrage the Muslim world against us, sending countless young proto-Bin Ladin's into Al Queda's waiting arms and giving their propagandists countless grist for their hate mills. They've alienated most of the Western world and nearly all of our heretofore staunchest allies into thinking the U.S. is more dangerous to world peace than terrorists. The reasons for invading Iraq are looking flimsier and flimsier. Somehow we've gone from being the Good Guys to being Imperialistic Devils in the court of world opinion.
History gave us the opportunity to make something meaningful from the ashes of madness, but the pathetic excuse of an administration we have running the show turned the victims into just another footnote in history. If I had died during 9/11 and was aware of what was going on in this world I would be one pissed off specter.
