In a response to an entry by [livejournal.com profile] theferrett, [livejournal.com profile] blairwitchgreen wrote:

In the aftermath of 9/11, when I was struggling with the horror and shock, and trying to come to grips with this scary new world I had to raise my child in, one thing settled in my heart as compensation for the lives lost, a purpose to the horror. It was the feeling that this was a grand opportunity to unite the civilized world, to draw us all together, to revel in our commonalities as human beings. As countries all over the world expressed their unity and support for us in the time of tragedy, I thought to myself "The victims of 9/11 gave their lives for this opportunity to bring the human village closer together. God works in mysterious ways I guess."

And then the Bushies blew it big time. In the year and half since 9/11, they've managed to further enrage the Muslim world against us, sending countless young proto-Bin Ladin's into Al Queda's waiting arms and giving their propagandists countless grist for their hate mills. They've alienated most of the Western world and nearly all of our heretofore staunchest allies into thinking the U.S. is more dangerous to world peace than terrorists. The reasons for invading Iraq are looking flimsier and flimsier. Somehow we've gone from being the Good Guys to being Imperialistic Devils in the court of world opinion.

History gave us the opportunity to make something meaningful from the ashes of madness, but the pathetic excuse of an administration we have running the show turned the victims into just another footnote in history. If I had died during 9/11 and was aware of what was going on in this world I would be one pissed off specter.

Uh oh. An entry from [livejournal.com profile] cellio, who was just up at Cooper's Lake, included this tidbit:

Someone asked on a mailing list recently whether this is a "use the jackhammer to drive tent stakes" year or a "swarms of giant mosquitos" year; I can report that the mosquitos not only are giant but are wearing scuba gear. It's been a wet summer, at least recently.

Eat your garlic and brewer's yeast (makes you a wee bit less tasty to the bugs), and bring some ammonia to apply to the bites (reduces the itching) if you're coming to Pennsic, eh?

From a CNN.com page:

"The president has taken a courageous stand in favor of traditional marriage at a moment in American history when the courts are conspiring with anti-family extremists to undermine our nation's most vital institution," said the Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition.
Dammit, "expand", not "undermine", idiot. *grrr* Nobody's explained to me how this "undermines" marriage. Sure, it undermines heterosexual privelege, but that's not what he said.

Someday ... Someday I'm going to be sufficiently organized that the night before I leave for Pennsic isn't a mad scramble.

I screwed up, lost track of which bills I'd been putting off how long, and found a cut-off notice from the power company. I did manage to fix that, but I don't think I can pay my HMO premium now. This is going to get ... interesting.

How did I manage to let myself run out of Homespun Ceilidh Band business cards? (I print my personal cards myself on my laser printer, but the band got professionally printed cards.) I was counting on handing out a bunch of those at War. Whooooops. (I also didn't pick up extra copies of our CD like I'd planned, because rehearsal got cancelled this week.)

I'll feel so much better once I'm there, I've slept, and (the part that takes longest) I've decided to stop fretting about the stuff it's too late to take care of.

I got word from [livejournal.com profile] anniemal that Perrine's way of adjusting to being in a strange house that belongs to other, larger cats is to terrorize the other cats into agreeing that the territory is now hers. (But she's such a tiny cat, and so gentle with humans... Yow.)
