There's a certain kind of elitist attitude that I'd never quite understood, even when noticing it within myself. This provides a huge clue, I think:

"I want to belong. I used to belong. But the group that I belonged to has changed into something that I don't fit anymore. So I don't belong. I don't believe that we have to play to the lowest common denominator in anything. I think we *should* strive to be more than average.
