"Sometimes Paul wrenches himself free of his culture
and says things illustrative of God's power to liberate
humans, a lot of other times he can't see past the end of
his culturally-bound nose. What is pretty clear, though is
that Paul, who sulks dramatically in some letters, is
compassionate in others, always manages to be searingly
sarcastic at least once per letter, swears quite a bit,
whines about his health, boasts that he's a good working
class boy, and laughs at his own bad writing did not think
he had all the answers. People who express a religious stake
in the New Testament should perhaps do him the courtesy of
not disagreeing on that point." --
