Phone has not magically fixed itself. Still not sure what failure mode would produce this symptom. QotD fits in SMS today...

Dial tone apparently came back by magic, 'cause I just noticed I had a PPP connection again (I'd left a little loop running in one window so I could check just by glancing at one of the computers on my way through the room). I got an SMS message saying that it sounded like a CO (telco "central office") problem rather than something in my house, my wiring, or the wiring on the poles between the CO and my house -- I had thought so as well, which fed my annoyance at the long repair estimate (that is, I thought they should be able to fix it without even sending a truck, probably by resetting some device in their switching office) but I can't say "I knew that" because I don't know whether they same symptoms can also be caused by a wiring problem. (Rain getting into one of the pole-top junction boxes or something?)

I see the QotD script finally caught up, but that the copy I tried to post-by-email using SMS from my cell phone has not shown up. (I'll delete the second copy if it ever arrives.) I'm probably going to be too busy today to catch up on reading my friends page, so when I finally do get to it I'll probably have 300-400 entries to look at. Glad to have email again.
