"We do not know what we want and yet we are responsible for what we are - that is the fact." -- Jean-Paul Sartre (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] blueeowyn)

And a reminder: today is National Update Your Damn Profile Day, which I rather embarassingly forgot about last year and the year before. (I just updated mine last week when a friend misinterpreted the existence of stale info as a slight instead of an oversight -- don't let this happen to you -- and that event reminded me to look up when NUYDP Day was ... It's in my ~/calendar file now, so the computer will remind me if I forget again.)

Argh! I've been seeing more comment-spam lately, and on waking after too little sleep and seeing LJ comment notification email that read just like the beginning of a sales pitch and didn't seem to make much sense otherwise, I quickly -- too quickly for being not quite awake -- deleted it and checked the "report as spam" button.

Which would have made perfect sense except that five minutes later it finally occurred to me that a) the user who posted the comment was on my friendslist, not a random throwaway account, and b) there was no link to a web page or mention of a specific product -- it sounded like the beginning of spam, but didn't follow through.

Noticing (a) and (b) tickled my "something's wrong with this picture" sense, which woke me up a bit more so that I was able to notice c) that read by an awake person and folllowing the context ... uh, damn, it wasn't spam at all, and actually fit the discussion.

Oh crap. Gotta figure out how to contact the LJ admins to say "oops", and apologize to the person who's comment I deleted.

Oof. Just noticed that /home non my file server is 100% full, which means some things are going to start breaking soon if they haven't already. I'm not at home right now ...

a) I really need to scrape together funds to buy a larger hard disk for the file server.

b) I'm really glad I can telnet to my house LAN to start deleting stuff and compressing other stuff easily from here.

In other news, as long as I'm babbling inanely about my computers, I was recently given a scanner/copier/inkjet-printer combo dohickey (okay, a little large for "dohickey" -- make that "thingie"), with a USB port on it, but my bedroom Linux machine can't see it. :-( Gonna try swapping out the cable before I dive into Serious Troubleshooting mode. Uh, after I remember where I stashed the scavenged USB cables I got in December ...
