"Humour, like politeness, is one of the social lubricants. An
observation that a serving officer (from Heathrow airport, no less)
made to me some years ago was that any cop who hears a joke from a
member of the public early on in their interaction knows that the
person they're dealing with is not going to be trouble, even when
the joke may be at the cop's expense or faux-mocking. Banning them,
on pain of punishment, from a screening process actually removes one
of the cues an experienced officer can use to tell the good-uns from
the bad-uns." -- Ian Mason,
