I got far too little sleep this morning, but at least it was for a reasonable purpose. A roofer came out this morning to look at my roof and give an estimate. I was muddle-headed enough to forget to ask some of the questions I should have, and to forget to ask whether he could nail a tarp up there while he was there, but I did get an estimate and I handed him my camera before he went up so I got photos as well.

Hearing footsteps overhead really freaked out Perrine.

I should get more than one estimate (this is only the second roofer to call back; the first was too far away (the web site where I requested estimates from local contractors has a bug in its definition of 'local')), and I should try to track down reviews or something (I got good vibes from this guy, but I really know nothing about him), but this does feel like A Step has been taken, y'know?

[Urk. I'm clearly still feeling the effects of too little sleep.]

The good news: the wood feels solid and isn't sagging, so I should get away with just getting new rubber/tar/whatever-they-use on there. The scary news: a chunk of that material has blown off (I guess the sheet that fell Wednesday was from my roof after all). The news that made me wince: $1,700 (twice that for the whole house, but the 2nd-floor roof isn't leaking yet ...).

two photos )

Going from the location of the chimney in these photos, the stripped area looks like it's right over the wall that water ran down inside of to get to the ceiling of the first floor and drip onto a server. The older leak near the back of the third floor is roughly under the dark spot near the upper right corner of the first photo (which I'm assuming is another hole in the outer layer, but it's not as clear in the photo).

The pile of cinderblocks and bricks, by the way, is holding up -- and just as importantly holding down -- the antenna for the wireless broadband. The broadband folks have said that I have higher winds than any of their other customers, and they added more ballast and longer bolts until the antenna stopped getting blown out of position.

I think I'm going to bail on the Performers' Revel today (I'm already missing the recorder group meeting). When I started writing this I was feeling better than yesterday, but not like I had a big reserve of spoons to draw on; I took a break in the middle to grab a bite to eat, and in the meantime my legs have started hurting badly again and my brain is slowing down. I'm going to lie down for a spell and see whether I gain the energy to get out to the credit union and grocery store later (tomorrow seems rather more likely).
