"The problem is that, although we're all entitled to our beliefs, our culture increasingly holds that science is just another belief. Maybe this is because it's easier to believe something -- anything -- than not to know.

"We don't like uncertainty -- so we gravitate back to the last comfortable solution we had, and in this way we elevate belief to the status of fact.

"But scientists are comfortable with not knowing. They thrive on it. They don't assume that just because they had an idea it must be right. They attack it as vigorously as they can because they don't want to lie to themselves."

I've got a bunch of stuff to write about that I keep putting off until I've got a chunk of time when I feel alert enough to do so and nothing incredibly urgent I need to do instead, but I'd better get this announcement out now, without waiting for the energy to do an everything-entry, 'cause it was already short notice when I got it ...

The short version: Concert announcement -- classical guitarist Lucas Imbiriba, Friday 2009-02-20, 7:30 PM, at Hope Lutheran Church in College Park, Maryland

The long version: here's the announcement from a 3LF bandmate and ex-housemate:

One of my brothers, Lucas Imbiriba, is a professional classical guitar player, winner of several international contests, and last year finished his master degree in Germany. He is coming to the US to apply to guitar PhD programs and will come to Baltimore this Friday.

In order for him to know some of what I do, my friends and community, I organized a little recital or him to present. It will be in College Park, at Hope Lutheran Church, this Friday, 7:30pm (see address bellow).

I know it's on very short notice, but I think it will be good.

He will play both classical guitar repertoire as well as some brazilian songs (bossa nova, funk).

From Rt.1:
If you're coming from D.C. (south), turn left on Guilford Dr., which is in between a Exxon gas station and Plato's dinner.
Drive until the second intersection and make a left U-turn.
The church is right there on the right.

Parking may be a problem. The church is in construction so you must park on the front parking lot. Try to go up the grass if you can. You'll be ticketed if you park on the street. You may park at the meters near CVS.

I'll be there. I'm looking forward to hearing this.
