"It's easy enough to tell a child to ignore it (over and over and fucking over again), but they can't. They're right at the point where they're starting to move from the family socialization unit to a society socialization unit, and they're in the process of learning how to integrate into society. They *need* to pay attention to everything around them; how many fen are not good at social issues because they were rejected around that point, and so they missed basic things on integrating with societal units around them? If a child is developing properly, they need, at that age, to be incredibly sensitive to the people around them, both the good and the bad." -- [info] thespian, 2009-05-17

(Yeah, the QotD was late this morning. The host the cron job runs on got bogged down, with loads reported by 'uptime' in the 350 range -- I've never seen load numbers that high and didn't know that was possible. An hour after the script started, it had gotten to the third line, and a couple minutes after I noticed that, a sysop sent a "system going down now" message and rebooted the machine (then I logged back in and ran the QotD script by hand).)

I can't afford to pay for Balticon, but with it bein' nearby and all, my plan is to head up sometime Saturday (health permitting) to loiter in the lobby and take advantage of so many of my friends being in one place to say hello to and be social, even if I can't afford any other aspects of the con. (If I had the cash, I'd at least buy a day membership, but it's unfortunately not an option.)

I'll tweet more detailed plans (such as "on my way now") as Saturday takes shape, but I don't think most of the folks who might be looking for me will see Twitter, so "sometime Saturday" will have to do until you see me.
