Annnndddd we're back to someone pounding, pounding, pounding on the door next-door and shouting somebody's name from the sidewalk to try to wake them up. I've got someplace I'd really like to go in the morning, earlier than I'm usually up, so I was hoping that the few days' reprieve from wee-hours noise in front of the house next door would last another night. No such luck. (Dude! If you're trying to shout loudly enough to get the attention of someone in the house with closed windows, isn't it obvious that you'll be disturbing the person in the house with windows open, which you're also standing in front of, well before you succeed in rousing the person whose attention you're trying to get? (And maybe if she's in the habit of falling asleep in between telling you to come on over and your arrival, and thus not opening the door, there's a bigger problem here than any one night's difficulty gaining entry?)).

From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2008-02-01:

"...as there were no pilgrims around I hired two drunks from the next town and put them on the ice. One of them has his face right on the ice and looks like he is in very deep meditation. The accountant's truth: he was completely drunk and fell asleep, and we had to wake him up at the end of the take. It might seem like cheating, but it is not. Bells from the Deep is one of the most pronounced examples of what I mean when I say that only through invention and fabrication and staging can you reach a more intense level of truth that cannot otherwise be found." -- Werner Herzog, film director, quoted in the book Herzog on Herzog on making his film Bells from the Deep.
