"Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with His gracious presence." -- Johann Sebastian Bach (b. 1685-03-31 Gregorian / 1685-03-21 Julian[*], d. 1750-07-28)

[And to folks celebrating on the Julian calendar (members of some Eastern Orthodox churches), Merry Christmas!]

[*] In Germany, different regions made the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar at different times ... ranging from 1583 to 1700. Since the Wikipedia entry for Bach gives both versions of his brithdate, I'm assuming (at least until I get around to doing more research) that (a) Eisenach (where Bach was born) is in one of the areas that converted late, (b) the editor(s) of that Wikpedia page are uncertain when Eisenach made the switch, or (c) there's a policy of giving both Julian and Gregorian dates for stuff that happened in Germany between 1583 and 1700 just in case readers aren't sure which calendar applies where and when.
