Why isn't "vacuum" spelled with a 'w' (i.e. 'vacwm')? I mean, it's got a literal double-'u' in it right there (and 'w' replaced 'uu' in other words, 'uu' having replaced wynn (ƿ) which had replaced 'uu' even earlier (apparently they went back to 'uu' because wynn was too easily confused with 'p')).

Yeah, I should be asleep.

As long as I'm thinking about wynns, have a familiar song I've been playing with (I haven't been able to get yogh and wynn to print, so this took a trip out through the printer and back in through the scanner so I could hand-draw the yoghs):

A version of the Alphabet Song with the letters aesc, eth, yogh, thorn, oethel, and wynn stuck back in, and the last linerewritten to fit the reduced amount of space left over.

(Should I have called it "The Anachronist's Alphabet Song"?)

"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare. " -- James Madison (b. 1751-03-16, d. 1836-06-28; US President 1809-1817; principal author of US Constitution; co-author of the Federalist Papers), "Political Observations", 1795-04-20

Argh! Sometime between 16:00 and 17:15 today, the charger / AC adaptor for my Mac (Powerbook G4, 65W charger) died. Even though the little light showed it was plugged in, the battery was running down -- at first, the indicator in the status/menu bar kept alternating between "Not charging" and an unplugged time-remaining countdown; now it doesn't even do that and the computer makes a funny noise when plugged in.

Anybody got a spare 65W power supply from a Powerbook that went bad in some other way? (Yeah, I'm hitting Amazon and Google to check prices on ones available that way.)

*sigh* Let's see how much of the stuff I was in the middle of working on I can get copied -- with where-I-was notes -- over to Mom's computer, before the battery completely runs out.
