"Closets are built for us. Closets are created by social and structural expectations about who we are supposed to be, and the consequences of defying that." -- Robot Hugs, 2015-04-09
Today is National Coming Out Day. The comic I quoted and linked to says a lot about the coming-out process -- and more significantly, the coming-out narrative -- in less easily extracted-for-quoting bits. Go read it. It's long for an installment of a webcomic, but it's still a webcomic; it's not a long read.
Robot Hugs points out problems with how we think about closets and coming out, but it's still important to be visible ... for people who can afford to be visible. Each person who is out makes it a tiny bit safer and easier for the next person. And knowing LTBGQ people personally is the most significant thing affecting how people feel about our civil rights.
