"I remember reading something saying that much of modern
conservatism is rooted in this idea that life is somehow graded
on a curve - that not only is being better off than someone else
more important than simply being well off, but how much better
off you are is even more important than that. It's not wanting
inner-city schools to improve since it means that the private
school you send your kids to won't be as dramatically better.
It's the belief that even if you have a good job and own your own
house, car, and business, the fact that the Pakistani-American
engineer who lives three houses down drives a better car than you
somehow invalidates your success."
