"One of my pet peeves is Keats' whine about "unweaving the rainbow", the pernicious idea that understanding something kills the joy in it. I LOVE knowing why rainbows exist, and knowing so has helped me find them. I love knowing stuff. I wish I knew more math, as it's the language the universe is written in." -- minoanmiss, 2019-08-02
[My mother used to tell me, as a child, as an adolescent, as an adult, and into middle age, that I couldn't properly enjoy the beauty of nature because I was too into science. She never understood that I saw the beauty double, once on a surface level, and again with scientific knowledge or scientific curiosity. Or maybe thrice, as I also saw/see it as a poet, and she didn't. Unlike some repeated wrongnesses that convinced me of Things I Couldn't Be, that one just pissed me off. "I'm trying to explain to you how much more beautiful this is than you already think it is; why are you telling me that means I can't appreciate it?"]
