"The lapis lazuli, used to form the [Tutankhamun's mask's] eyebrows and the makeup surrounding the eyes, came from much further away: the mountains of Badakhshan in Afghanistan. To access the lapis lazuli, miners piled wood against the rock face and set fire to it. Then, they threw water over the wall, causing it to cool and crack, revealing the lapis lazuli. Once hacked free, these lumps entered the Near Eastern trade network, passing through Mesopotamia to eventually reach Egypt, often as a gift of the Babylonian king." -- from "Four things you probably didn't know about Tutankhamun's mask" by Garry Shaw, The Art Newspaper, 2022-10-04

[The calendar file on the system where I have a shell account shows today as the 100th anniversary of the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb, but Wikipedia explains that the first step of the entrance staircase of the tomb was uncovered 1922-11-04, the antechamber was cleared bewteen November 1922 and February 1923, and the seal of the tomb itself was broken 1923-02-17. Archaeology Archive goes into more detail about late November 1922. 26 November: first look into tomb [antechamber]; 27 November: "Carter and Carnarvon, along with latter's daughter Lady Evelyn Herbert, explore the Antechamber and Annexe, noticing a sealed door to another chamber"; 28 November: "Carter, Carnarvon, and Herbert re-open an ancient looters' passage through the sealed doorway and enter the Burial Chamber." Then 17 February 1932: The Burial Chamber is officially opened. So I guess the NetBSD calendar file is off by one day regarding first entry into the burial chamber by a back way, and Wikipedia notes the media event covering officially opening the main door?]
