The Catalina had its main bearing go bad and threw a rod. It was making a terrible noise, so I took it to my parents' mechanic. He tried a few process-of-elimination diagnostics, told me what was wrong, and said to take it home, park it in front of my apartment (this was when I lived in Greenbelt), put it up for sale "as is", and don't let anyone test drive it.
It made it to within half a mile of my apartment before it went BANG! and dropped all its oil on the road, right at the stop sign at the top of the exit ramp, getting onto 193. It was Easter, and Mom had given me a plate of Easter dinner to take to the police station for my sister, so when a Greenbelt cop stopped to ask whether I needed help, I had him radio her to say I had her dinner.
