Can I borrow a band saw (at least I think that's the tool I want) in the Balto-Wash area ... for about five minutes? I want to slice some brass.

What kind of brass? Tubing, flat plate, some kind of shaped object? How thick is it? Do you need to shape it, a la jigsaw, or just cut through it in a straight line?

(Have hacksaw, not band saw. Thought it might be useful to brainstorm a little here.)

1" diameter solid rod. I want to cut some slices -- discs -- about 1/8" think from it.

Okay.

My father did a lot of fabricating with brass and steel and aluminum. He would have used the vice grips on the drill press to hold the rod in place, would have scratch-marked it, and would have then used a rapid revolving drill (think of a largish flat plate from a dremel that can cut) to slice it. A lot depends on the *kind* of brass, as it's not all the same hardness. 1/8 inch isn't easy to cut accurately with a hand saw.

My suggestion: find someone who has a machine shop and ask that person for help.

I have a small tabletop bandsaw that might suit your purpose, but I'm
pretty sure it has a wood blade in it, and you might want a metal blade
for that. I have a metal blade for my circular saw, but it's for larger stuff.
I have cutoff wheels for my Dremel that would work fine for smaller stock.
Unless it's brass sheet, in which case you want shears or snips.

Oversize, non-Dremmel cut-off wheels work (I think mine are from Black & Decker) will work, but I'm having trouble getting a straight, even cut. More often than not I wind up cuting a spiral. If you've got an appropriate jig or (as is likely) a steadier hand and better aim, that'll work in place of a band saw.

I like the icon, by the way.

It must be a Washington DC thing. At first, I was convinced you wanted to slice up a general or two.

I thought from the subject that he wanted to try a novel way of breaking up a band.

Now that you mention it, "slice some brass" has GOT to be a euphemism for SOMETHING. Hopefully something naughty!

I am so glad I have the friends I do.

Now to figure out what it should be a euphemism for ...

If you figure it out, don't tell me. *grin*
