What do people do with stolen copper pipes, sell them as scrap? Carved woodwork I can understand, because "salvage" in all forms sells for a high price.
U.S. pennies have been copper-plated zinc since 1982 because solid-copper pennies became worth more as copper scrap. In other parts of the world power lines and railroad rails have been stolen for their scrap value. (If you're too poor to have electricity, buy goods, or travel....) Baltimore has also had a recent incident with 130 aluminum street-light poles (30-ft/9m, 250-lb/115kg) stolen for scrap.
