"Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible." -- Jamie Raskin (candidate for Maryland State Senate), in response to a question while testifying before that same body, 2006-03-01.
[The question that sparked this response is a little startling given the context, leading one to wonder whether State Senator Nancy Jacobs had actually paid any attention to Mr. Raskin's testimony that preceeded her question.]

leemoyer for
quoting this
where I'd see it.)
EDIT: Note the Snopes link in a comment below, which documents a slightly different phrasing.

People place their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution; they don't put their hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.

Jamie Raskin ROCKS...
Jamie Raskin rocks. In fact, I'm going to steal that quote to use on Daily KOS and Booman Tribune... In fact, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was pretty damned inspiring too... That was a good occasion, to meet a number of local progressive candidates and get a sense of where they stand on issues of importance.
