I'd call it a gateway bug. When sending via an SMS to email gateway, the phone has no idea you're trying to send an email. It (and the network) just send the multi-part SMS to the gateway.

I think the limit is 180 characters in the default 7 bit encoding, 160 in 8 bit, and 80 in 16 bit unicode.

So the information passed to the gateway in that case is enough for it to be able to tell (if whoever wrote the program had thought to include the test) that the chunks are related and ordered sections of a multipart message, not unrelated messages that just happen to originate from the same phone?

Yah, that'd make it a gateway bug.

(My not-sure-I-remembered-right notion that some phones can reassemble the multi-part messages to display as one long message does imply this; I wasn't entirely confident in that recollection.)
