From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-12-03:

"A lot of people see God as a sacred seal of approval on some of their worst fantasies about other people." -- Karen Armstrong, religious scholar and former nun, from a New York Times interview.

That's fascinating, but I still find your emphasis on compassion simplistic. We know from Freud that all true achievement derives from selfishness. Who cares if Michelangelo was nice to his next-door neighbors?

Religions are not dealing with geniuses. They are dealing with ordinary people.

The neighbors would care.

You might like this discussion with Armstrong about Fundamentalism. One of the points is that the solution to bad religion is better religion, not less religion.

from Nancy's quote: We know from Freud that all true achievement derives from selfishness.

We *know*? If that's the level of argument in the article, I'm not inclined to read it.

Nancy, I didn't mean that as a smack to *you*; sorry it was so curt.

No problem--I didn't take it personally.

It's possible that Armstrong gave a flip answer because the interviewer said something which was so stupid.
