"Lindbergh flew the Atlantic without a radio, but we wouldn't think of going through the produce section without having a little cell phone on our hip." -- Garrison Keillor, on the radio program A Prarie Home Companion, 2006-07-02

Emilia Earhart died doing that kind of thing -- she crashed into the ocean and they only found her plane a couple years ago. (Too bad it wasn't the fascist Lindbergh.) Sometimes technology is an unquestioned Good Thing. And sometimes, much as I hate cell phones, Garrison Keillor is just a wanker.

Actually, she had a radio; I don't think a cell phone would have helped.

Actually, Lindbergh was far from being a fascist. He was asked to go to Germany and evaluate their aviation industry in terms of preparing for war. He came back and told the truth, that Germany was very advanced in relation to the USA in terms of technology, preparation, and materials for aerial war. he also thought that the US should be prepared to lookout for her own interests over Europe's (very much like the current position of the Libertarian Party...).

He ended up caught up in the "America First" party and used, not all together willingly. (Remember, he moved his family to Europe for several years after his child was kidnapped and killed. So I doubt that he held any particular liking for fascism or dislike for Europe.)

Lindbergh was a complex person, like most of us.
