Swing was around well before Benny Goodman's band hit the Palomar in 1935, and there was a lot more to the jazz of the 1920s than "plunky". Although some jazz biographers played up the (white) popularization in the mid-30's as the "beginning" of swing, swing rhythm, swing notes, swing notation and swing recordings were around in the 1920's. Fletcher Henderson's arrangements changed after Louis Armstrong joined his band in 1924, e.g, call and response format (reeds/brass). The Savoy opened its doors in 1926, Chick Webb started playing there (leading the Harlem Stompers) in 1927, and "Lindy Hop" got into the papers that year. Starting in 1934, Henderson sold his arrangements from the 20's and early 30's to Goodman.
