"I've given thought to how I'd feel about Talk Like a Nazi Day... and I think I'd be okay with it. Because it means presenting Nazism as a ridiculous thing to believe in and be. Something that nobody takes seriously. And there are still neonazis out there that I'd like to depower. And if everyone thinks it's nothing people do normally or seriously, it makes it harder for people to turn to it in reality. So, you lose new recruits." -- [livejournal.com profile] leora, 2006-09-19 ( thread) (specific comment) in a discussion sparked by one user's complaint that LJ's celebration of International Talk Like A Pirate Day constituted glorification of terrorists.

Hmm... they should also be made aware that those same pirates, I dunno, helped America win the War of 1812. And that the tactics and strategies used by pirates were also mirrored by the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, a time when the very IDEA of those tactics were so shocking that calling them "terrorists" in their time would not be that much of an exaggeration.

I think we should keep our definition of "terrorist" fairly rigid in scope for those reason if no others.
