Like nearly all political- and social commentators, he is neglecting the Actual great challenge: Getting the human population under control and down to a semi-sane level, such that the planet can support it for more than a few generations. << 1 Billion to start. Otherwise, Everything else is moot.
Even the energy demands pale in comparison. OTOH, energy, etc. can possibly be dealt with in a generation of two. Population will not only take a long time, it is a Permanent challenge. Even cheap, regular FTL flight almost certainly won't allow exporting substantial amounts of Earth-folks anytime in the next century or more, so a realistic, Local fix is needed.
