You may have gotten an extra-hot pepper. I find huge variation in the amount of hotness from pepper to pepper withn any variety, I feel sure its at least partly a result of sun/temperature/wetness conditions under which it ripens, since peppers from the exact same bush end up different. There are general truisms - habaneros are hotter than jalapenos, and the particular flavor of each pepper runs fairly true, but I usually taste a little bit of the individual pepper I am using to determine how much heat it has to determine how much to use.
