Hmm. Looks like the snow started an hour or two before the folks on television last night were predicting it would. When I woke up two and a half hours ago (no, that is definitely nowhere near enough sleep, you're quite right -- I just suddenly popped awake after two and a half hours of aleep and have no idea why) it was already starting here in SoWeBo. Seems to be accumulating fairly slowly though.

The way my back feels, shovelling would be completely out of the question today regardless of how responsible I want to be regarding the sidewalk. Fortunately, according to those same telly-folks, it should be a job for a push-broom today, not a shovel. And if it continues falling at the current rate, it'll be a while before there's even enough to bother doing anything about.

(Hmm. New forecast just came on while I was writing this -- they've added an inch to last night's predictions. And it sounds like it's the extra-slippery stuff, however small the quantity that's fallen yet. So if you're driving in the area today watch out for the folks not taking conditions into account, and good luck dodging their errors.)

I'm moving most of the things on today's to-do list down two places, and inserting "get more sleep" and "figure out how to make back hurt less" at the top. There's stuff I want to do tomorrow. (It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get to rehearsal tonight.) I'm feeling impatient to get more computer equipment moved into the rack, but I'd better not push my body too hard. There's really no urgency there except my own impatience anyhow.

Yeah, I decided not to risk it even though my effective commute is under 3 miles (home to closest MARC station). If the trains ran late, I'd think about it but I have work here, and my boss will be pleased if I can finally wrap up this project I've been working on since I was hired.

If your back is really hurting, Mazda won't help. And S_C took it to work, anyway. A good day to stay put.

I hope your back gets better. I wish I could teleport you to my chiropractor. Have you tried lying flat on a hard floor with your lower legs on a chair that puts them parallel to the floor and your hip and knee joints at 90 degrees and concentrating on letting your back flatten into the floor? I often find that helpful.

Right here at 10:05 EST we've got slightly < .25" and the roads are barely wet, but elsewhere, apparently, cars are skidding around in fine D.C. style.

"If your back is really hurting, Mazda won't help."

Ow. True, that. (I just found out today is housemate's birthday; he's headed out to dinner with other friends in Bethesda, and when I thought of going that far in any car tonight I quickly realized it would be a very bad idea.)

I wanted to go buy washers for the rack today, having forgotten them yesterday, but decided that anything involving driving was best postponed.

I don't feel too terribly bad while lying on my back, even on a soft bed, but trying to get up again, or moving around upright, still hurts a lot. I'll try the flatten-against-the-floor trick.

Did we ever get you that nice, proper snow shovel with the big scoop and the angle in the handle?

No, though I was tempted to pick one up a month or two ago when I saw them on sale ... I keep forgetting to pick one up and evaluate the length of the handle relative to my own size. (I'm sure the funky handle -- which looks like a storage nuisance but oh well -- really makes a bigger difference, but even just putting a longer straight handle on a regular snow shovel would make it less painful for me to use. Years ago I saw an earlier version of the bent-handle snow shovel that had a shorter handle than the ones I've seen recently, and it was way too short for me. Someday I'll win the lottery and have a set of tools all custom made exactly to fit my body, right?)
