For most frames like you are talking about, the second one will be find. In fact, it's actually a very strong joint, even with just a "spot" weld. (we built a frame for a oxyacetylene torch like that. carried everywhere, rolled around, dropped into and out of the pickup truck.

From you description, I suspect that you are wanting a frame to rack mount effects & audio gear into on the vertical front and a mixer on a slanted top. You can buy them as open frames, partial open frames, and fully enclosed. If it's for gear being used on stage that stays together, I really, really suggest that you look at one of the molded armoured type units. With it mounted on wheels, removable front & bank panels, and a removable top panel to cover the mixer, it simplifies setup and tear down tremulously. The one we put together for my son's youth choir was like that, unroll the snake to it, pop the panels off, run power to it, and in less than 5 minutes the sound system was up and running.

If you do go ahead and build one, you can buy the screw strips for the racks already tapped for 10-32 screws, that you can fasten to your frame. I helped some friends at church put together an audio desk that used these screwed into the wooden sides. It looked really cool with the gear bolted directly into the desk.
