That was exactly the advice I heard from my father when I was a child and a neighbour bought a Jag. (It sure was pretty though.)

I also heard that they spend even more time in the shop if you don't drive 'em really fast for a while every week or two -- something about the engine getting gunked up if it doesn't get a workout. I don't know whether that's true or not, but it was part of the lore when I was a kid.
