"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope
that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say,
'I used everything you gave me.'" -- Erma Bombeck (b. 1927-02-21,
d. 1996-04-22)
I agree, but I liked the quote anyhow. I like the notion of "fully used every God-given gift, and fully used up the ones than could be used up" even though I don't put talent in that second category. (I can imagine that some people would.)
I was going to say, "...which just goes to show that Erma Bombeck didn't actually have any, since if she did, she'd know talent isn't something you can use up." If there were an afterlife, I'd imagine that the myriad dead geniuses were creating works about the likes of which we can only speculate...
But I'm not as nice as the first poster. And probably had less sympathy for Erma Bombeck to begin with.
I lost interest in Erma as I grew older, but respected her take on huswifery, and her audacity to write about it. It is mostly shit and string beans.
The quote was taken out of context. She also said she'd used up the love, the body, and everything else she had. Her implication was that she'd lived life fully.
