"Don't ever become a pessimist... a pessimist is correct oftener than an optimist, but an optimist has more fun, and neither can stop the march of events." -- Robert A. Heinlein (b. 1907-07-07, d. 1988-05-08)

I live my life by this philosophy. My own version, based on a cliche I hear too often from my sister in law:

If your expectations are low enough you're never disappointed, but you're also never really happy.

...an optimist has more fun.

...right up until the crashing depression from repeated disappointment sets in.

I prefer Murphy's Corollary of the Power of Negative Thinking: "An optimist is never pleasantly surprised." I like pleasant surprises. And Robert A. Heinlein couldn't tell his ass from a hole in the ground most of the time.
