I've got the song "Signs" (at least I think that's the title) stuck in my head and I've no idea what put it there today.

The sign said, longhairfreakypeople need not apply
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask them why ...

First time I heard "Signs" was a cover by Tesla on their album "Five Man Acoustical Jam", but it may be originally by Five Man Electrical Band.

I'm not sure I've heard the Tesla version. I'm curious.

Were it on CD and not tape, I'd have you a digital copy in a day or two. Alas!

it wouldn't by any chance be at all related to the truly amazing number of longhairfreakypeople you know, would it? :)

Well, yeah, but that doesn't explain why now in particular.

Though there is that gathering I'll be on my way to in a few hours where several of said folks will all be in one place ...

Mmmmmmm. Longhairfreakypeople. Mmmmmmm.

He said "You look like a fine, upstanding young man; I think you'll do."
So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that! Me, working for you!"

I always get a strong visual impression of that line, more so than the rest of the song.

Anyone here should see Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs; think this one and "American Woman" vie therein for the "self-righteous hippie smugness" title.
(I get better results when I'm anonymous.)

Yeah, but what about:

C'mon, people now, smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right now!

I guess I like 'smug' hippie songs ... but it does help not to overthink 'em.

I can't see "Signs" as smug; more like ... venting of frustration. Though I guess somebody put off by simplistic idealism might be rubbed the wrong way by the final verse and the "what gives you the right / to keep other people out / or keep Mother Nature in" verse.

"American Woman" comes off more bitter than smug, to me (and it seems powerful musical ideas wind up attached to bitter songs -- "American Woman" is cool to listen to even if you ignore the words, and "How Do You Sleep" has some fascinating instrumentation, as I recall.)

I want to hear this song!

When I could still find classic-rock stations of any quality, it used to get played on those. I don't know whether you'd love it, but I do think you'd like it...

I could try singing it over the phone, but I'm not good enough to do it justice a capella.

Nope, but at some point I'll be on somebody's computer that is, and I'll try to remember to look for it then. (Or maybe somebody will just randomly happen to bring a copy to Baitcon or something, though it's probably too late for a general ping to be fruitful.)

It's "long-haired, freaky-lookin' people need not apply."

I haven't been able to get your version to scan to the melody of the version I'm used to hearing.

I had that song running through my head for the past 3 days or so. Please make it stop!

Could it have been a premonition of LJ's latest attack on its fanfiction-loving "freaks"? (Not that all of them are longhaired.) The timing's right on...

Oy. And timed when I've not got enough spare cycles to write a broadside.
