The reminder I was going to post yesterday about the two Homespun Ceilidh Band gigs in a row this weekend, except that I got distracted -- here's some cut&paste from Felicia's most recent mailing with details:

FRIDAY Night - AUGUST 24 -- NEW DEAL CAFE -- GREENBELT, MD
8:00 - 10:00 or so at the New Deal Cafe in Old Greenbelt

HCB will play acoustic celtic music in the cozy, friendly family atmosphere of the New Deal Cafe.

Parking is free in the Roosevelt Center parking lot.

THE LOCUS:

CenterWay service drive flanks a small shopping center that contains several small buildings, which surround a courtyard with a 1930s Monumentalist statue of a family (or maybe it's a mother & child). One of the small buildings facing onto this courtyard is The New Deal Cafe.

GETTING TO THE NEW DEAL CAFE:

  1. Take your best way to Route 193 (GreenBelt Road) where it crosses the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295); this is near where the DC Capital Beltway (495) crosses the BW-Parkway (295), and is also near the crossing of Kenilworth Avenue (Rte 201) and Greenbelt Road (Rte 193).

If you are coming from Silver Spring or Takoma Park, you can easily use Route 410, cross Route 1 and then turn left onto Route 201/Kenilworth Avenue, turn right onto Greenbelt Road/ Rte 193 towards NASA/Goddard, then pass 2 lights or so and turn left onto Southway (step 2).

To get to the New Deal Cafe, you need to be almost on top of the crossing of BW-Parkway and Route 193 (Greenbelt Road).

  2. From Rte.193, turn onto Southway, which begins at Route 193; you can turn only one way onto Southway from Route 193.

  3. Follow Southway for several blocks until it ends at a shopping center (Roosevelt shopping/community Center), at CenterWay.

  4. Proceed fearlessly into the shopping center. (The driveway along the shopping center front is CenterWay.) The New Deal Cafe is to the right, in the courtyard where the CenterWay driveway ends.

  5. You can park for free in the Roosevelt Center parking lot.

  6. For on-street or metered parking, read the signs.

    Saturday AUGUST 25, 2007:
SATURDAY CONCERT IN OLD TOWN BOWIE (Bowie, Md)

The exact location is the Town Green Park, 13050 9th Street, Bowie, MD 20715.

The event is sponsored by the City of Bowie. Admission and on-street parking are free.

GETTING TO THE BOWIE TOWN GREEN:

    1. Take your best route to Route 193 (Greenbelt Road) in Greenbelt.

    2. Follow Route 193 away from Greenbelt further out towards Bowie, well past Goddard Space Center.

    3. Turn Left onto Route 564 (Lanham Severn Road, which becomes 9th Street where the park is). You will be on Rte 564 for awhile.

On Route 564, cross Springfield (Hillmeade) Road. Go a few blocks; cross Church Lane. Pass Weed St on left, then Brady Ave on right.

STAY ON ROUTE 554, now called 9th Street; do NOT bear right onto 10th Street.

Pass a small sunny park on the right that has a small vintage cannon on it. Pass Park Road on the right and Park Avenue on the left.

    4. Prepare to look for parking on Chapel Avenue or Railroad Avenue on the right, both just a few feet before the Town Green, or along Chestnut Avenue on the left just a few feet after the Town Green.

Follow the curve of Rte 564.

    5. Cross Maple Avenue and start looking for the Town Green on the left -- big blue bird sculpture painted blue -- and for parking just past a pedestrian crosswalk by Chapel Avenue on the left and then Railroad Avenue on the right.

    6. YOU CAN PARK in the bank's & other parking lot across from the Town Green (Railroad Avenue on the right), or on the residential streets that flank the Green -- Chapel Avenue or Chestnut Avenue on the left off Rte 564; 8th Avenue 1 block to the left of & parallel to 9th Street (behind the Green).

    7. READ ANY SIGNS RELATING TO PARKING STRICTURES where you choose to park.

      NOTES:

The Bowie Town Green park is small and shady, and has a large bird sculpture that is painted blue, and the bird is wearing a suit.

IMMEDIATELY LOOK FOR PARKING as you approach the bird.

If you go over a bridge that spans railroad tracks, you have just passed the Town Green park. Turn around, look for the park (now on the right), and look for parking.

Anybody headed to Greenbelt from Baltimore on Friday? Or from Bowie to either Baltimore or Relay on Saturday afternoon?
