I fell asleep several times last night and today, but never stayed asleep long enough to feel as though I'd really slept. Consequently, I'm feeling discombobulated, my stomach is cranky, I've gotten nothing done today, and my sense of time is shot. With luck, this episode of mal-somnia (dys-somnia? I'll have to Google those terms when I'm more awake, and see whether they're already in use) will run out of steam and let me sleep long enough tonight to catch up. Wish me that luck. Not that my usual sleep is allthat great either.
But on Sunday I did get a niiice looong sleep, after having
played gigs Friday and Saturday. I woke up feeling alert, and
even kinda rested-ish. That feeling didn't last as long as I
would have liked, but it did mean that I was properly awake while
dmk and
whc were
here.
Alas, Monday I got hit by a migraine. I did eventually regain enough mental function to realize that I should take the Imitrex that my current doctor prescribed, and see how well that works. It helped significantly, but not as much as I'd hoped (maybe I should've taken a second one after two hours; I'm sure that I shold have taken the first much earlier than I did). The last time I had a prescription for beating back a migraine, many years ago, it was Midrin, a cocktail of drugs in one capsule, which was mighty effective but left me feeling drugged -- a feeling which I guess I can envision some folks enjoying recreationally, but which always just made me feel, "oh crap, the pain is gone but I still can't get anything done the rest of the day, dammit". (That, and I don't enjoy those sensations in the first place; they just make me feel helpless and stupid.) The Midrin did make me sleep well though, which meant I usually got off to a decent start the day after I took it. Imitrex, at least the way I took it this week, still left me feeling out-of-sorts the next couple of days, and still getting all those migraine-precursor symptoms like noise feeling like it's crushing my skull and my peripheral vision seeming subtly wrong. (This may have had something to do with my poor sleep last night/today.) I hope that I get a better result when I use it as instructed (i.e. take the first one when I first notice that a migraine is imminent instead of not thinking of it until pain has started and then spending too long asking myself, "is this serious enough to warrant trying the Imitrex or should I just take basil again?", then remember to take a second one two hours later if I'm not better instead of forgetting in the foggy-thinking distraction).
The effect of the weather on the volume of folks' car stereos is Not Helping. (Then again, I'm also hearing them from farher away than usual, since my hearing is doing that hyperacuity thang this week.)
So I'm going to be a while catching up on comments (I've read them, but haven't replied yet), all the more so with Stuff I Need To Get Done and then getting ready (and sorting out travel) for the HCB gig this weekend (a party in Southern Maryland). Thanks, y'all, for the comments about storing knives. I'm probably going to go with the magnet if I can find a studly enough one cheaply, just to save counter space (I like the idea of mounting it on the inside of a cabinet door, but that does mean more chances for motion to shake one loose), but it sounds like neither solution has any real problems to worry about, so if I stumble across a suitable knife block or get inspired to dig into the supply of wood in the basement and play with power tools before I find a big enough magnet, then I'll deal with rearranging the counter.
(no subject)
IRT to the knife storage, you might visit a thrift shop or three or a flea market to pick up a knife block or a cheap set of knives in a block. I have some cheap knives that I keep solely for chores where I don't want to risk damaging my good ones...
