From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-06-03.:

"I've lost count of the number of assurances politicians have offered us that they will, truly they will, ensure the creation of a reliable and nationally acceptable form of proportional representation the moment we vote them into power.

"So we do and lo and behold, the magic dust of the Great Parliamentary Fairy is thrown into the eyes of the winners, and they forget all about their pre-election promises. They just get more and more drunk bingeing on the headiest drug there is. Power. And bugger what the voters really want."

-- "Agony aunt" Claire Rayner, in "Liberal Democrat News", London, 20th May 2005.

To be fair, the only party I know of that's ever promised proportional representation when they get into power are these same Lib Dems, who have never actually been in power. There was one time when they came close, and I've never been sure whether they were sabotaged by dirty tricks from the other two, or sabotaged themselves in terror that they might have to live up to their promises.

But Claire Rayner is, I think, a little older than I am and has doubtless seen more elections.

Anything they get in Britain or in Canada, sadly, is light-years ahead of where we are in the U.S., where the prospect isn't even remotely being entertained. At least the Scots have a form of it, and the citizens of British Columbia have had a referendum of sorts. Here, the whole concept is treated with undisguised disdain at best and outright ridicule at worst. The voters here can't even vote for who they want when the ballot choices are reduced to two, they cry... how do you expect them to vote for anything else?
