Words are easy to defend, especially words whose meaning is so flexible. It is entirely possible that everyone in the current administration has managed to convince him- or herself that s/he is defending "liberty," even if it's only his/her own liberty to make enormous pots of cash.

Defending people who are harming none and otherwise doing what they will...that's hard. Not to mention unpopular.
