Way back in high school, when folks would ask me for sources (and I either didn't recall, or care, or feel like telling them), I decided that my policy would be that Any and all indirect sources would constitute 'my spies'. I've been using this ever since. Not Quite as effective now with the web, but ...
You have no idea how useful this was while working in DC for federal agencies. Entire Departments would get out of my way ... just in case. ;-) And the rest actually listened to me (trust me that this is a Great novelty there when you're a lowly contractor and they an exalted 'public servant'.)
