"In real life, we identify classes of people--rich and poor, for example--by their clothing. There's only one class system on the Internet, though: the clueful and the clueless. We can't see what someone's wearing when they type, so we look at how they type instead.

"Grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary are your shirt, pants, and shoes (respectively) when you're on the Internet. You can get by without them, but you really can't complain when people look at you sideways.

"Fortunately, upgrading to middle-class on the Internet is much easier than in real life. :-)"

I've always felt this way; in fact it's the main reason why I never I.M. or chat unless absolutely necessary. I know my typing is crap, however my editing skills tend to be good.

Dunno about that. $35 at Sears will make you middle class. It takes a long time to figure out where, in a complex sentence, you should -- and should not -- add punctuation.

Hmm. I had thought of punctuation as a kind of sub-class of grammar. Other than that, makes sense to me.

While I completely agree with the sentiment, it tangentially brings up spaces in which one's virtual shirt, pants, and shoes are one's skin, clothes and hair.
