... after 75 minutes, it begins to dawn on me that trying to open eleven 25MB TIFF files for editing in GIMP on a machine wiith 320MB RAM (and other apps already running) may not have been my swiftest move ...

GIMP is pretty cool but I might have a sneaking suspicion it'll bind up like that...
You have too much RAM when
-your PC draws too much power and the laptop has no battery life.
-you need a new fan from Canadian Tire to point at the open case.
-your 32 bit OS can only address the first 4G and
-up to half of that is reserved for memory mapped I/O
-your 64 bit PC cost more than your house to fill with 18446744073709551616 bytes.
