An LED Tea Light might be a nice effect, if it's small enough. No separate battery compartment, and if it has to stick out of the bottom, it's a good shape to function as a base.
I nearly always do the "traditional" design when I actually do a pumpkin, with the biggest decision being shape and number of teeth. I like looking at the cool and creative designs, but when carving, I really enjoy just doing the kind of thing I worked on as a kid.
