woefully behind on replies to comments again, yes. Need to look up what kind of RAM I need for various machines. But one of the nifty things about X is that when one computer is too busy, I can just offload a lot of the work to another computer. It'll be nicer when I get the file server working as a file server again, but I used 'scp' to copy a bunch of image files over to a less-used machine and told it to open GIMP on the screen of the computer in the bedroom. Ah, the miracle of cutting edge ... ah, what, 1980s? 1970s? ... technology!

Late last night, in bed, I heard over the whoosh of the space heater next to the bed, a loud clicking sound similar to the sound of someone opening the security door downstairs. At first I thought it was my imagination, then I heard it again. I turned off the heater and heard it more clearly, then went downstairs to see what was going on.

I went to the front door and heard the click again, this time behind me ... in the direction of the kitchen? Heading toward the kitchen, I heard it yet again: this time, clearly from the server room.

It was the hard drive in the machine I'd just started running GIMP on, in the process of opening two dozen large image files. whrrrrwhrrrrtcktytcktywhrrrCLICK!whrrrrwhrrrr

Today I woke with the word/phrase/uh, string-of-phonemes, "Brekekekex koax koax" running through my brain. Not so much the sound as the feeling in my mouth of pronouncing it. Odd. I've never performed the play -- I don't think I've even read it all the way through - and haven't thought about it in years. Why would I wake up with the feel of that sound in my mouth?

Then again, I woke from some Very Strange Dreams yesterday ...

Speaking of yeaterday, most of yesterday was not a good day for me. I woke in way too much pain to make it out to the podiatrist, even if I'd had a ride there (I was planning to attempt the two hour bus/subway/bus plan, since the appointment nurse there was able to give me complete directions from my neighbourhood) so I called to reschedule. Apparently the pain made it into my voice because the person I spoke to commented on it. That was forty minutes after taking pain meds. The pain got down to "could go out in a car but it might not be a very good idea" in late afternoon. I spent the rest of the day wondering whether I was going to feel well enough to go anywhere that evening and whether I could arrange a ride on short notice. I stayed home and scanned more film. (Leading to the preceeding bits about opening lots of large image files on a computer downstairs from my bedroom.)
