From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-07-19:

"One human rights truth, universally acknowledged, is that oil is an obstacle to democracy in every developing society. When a government can get what it needs out of oil derricks and ceases to derive its revenue from taxes, it loses any incentive to respond to the people. Theocracy in Iran is built on oil and will endure as long as the oil price holds up." -- Michael Ignatieff, of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University

I think that generalization should be extended to any raw material that is in high demand whether it's oil, gold, diamonds, bananas, cocaine or something else.
