"When I was living in London in 1995, I was reading a newspaper, and one of the stories 'in other news' caught my eye. It seems that someone had walked into the Open University's offices in Cambridge and caused a disturbance, announcing that he was God and that he wanted some demands met. The police were called and normal life resumed. I wish I'd kept the cutting, because a quote from one of the people involved has stayed with me ever since: 'It was crazy, that he was claiming to be God. I mean, if you were God and you came to Cambridge, you'd go to King's or Trinity, not the OU.'

"It's something to remember when you read the story again, to those of us who know it as something so familiar, that all around us are people who might believe in God but think of zir as far away, scary, and uninterested: it's easy to forget that so often the Christmas message of a God who actually wants to hang around with ordinary people just doesn't get through."

[To my brothers and sisters[*] in Christ, I wish you a Christmas both blessed and joyful. And a merry Christmas to the not-particularly-religious folks just celebrating a cultural holiday or enjoying a day off, too. And a reminder that if you do it right (for an admittedly perverse definition of "right"), Christmas can be three and a half weeks long instead of a mere twelve days. :-)]

[*] And in-betweens and none-of-the-aboves, of course. Uh, maybe I should just say "siblings in Christ"? But that doesn't have quite the right ring to it, does it? Anyhow, to all my co-religionists of all genders, okay?

And there's those of us who never think of G-d as remote, scary or
uninterested in humans - in fact, just not human at all.

Did you ever read Ivan's dream (about the Inquisitor and Jesus) in The Brothers Karamazov?

In my first year teaching at USF, one afternoon there was a gas leak right by a bush, so the fire department had to come out and put out the burning bush.

They didn't even ask it what it was thinking.
