"The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending, then having the two as close together as possible." -- George Burns (b. 1896-01-20, d. 1996-03-09) (thanks to [info] blueeowyn)

I wish someone would tell our rabbi that, he likes to talk at length to a captive crowd.

Here's the rule (from someone who writes these things as part of her living): 7 minutes (that's about a page and a half) for all shabbat sermons (Better: don't give a sermon, teach and have participation, but if that can't be arranged...).

For high holidays: for each seven minutes, you must include at least one story (i.e. something that has characters, a beginning an ending and a point related to the sermon itself). If you go over 28 minutes total, you're not being nice, and you're probably not a good speaker, either.

I learned from a rabbi at HUC (but I can't remember which one) the following wisdom: the mind can only absorb what the tuchis can tolerate.
